Why should the beam in big hall are of large depth than breadth?

The stregth of beam is directly propotional to its breadth and depth
but it is not same when we increse breadth and depth.
As the depth increases,the stregth increses cubicaly,Thats why the depth in more than its breadth.
or
I=(bd^3)/12 in rectangular sections
So I is large when depth is incresed
