The nasal passage is lined with fine hair and mucous. Breathing through the nostrils allows the air we breath in to pass through the nasal passage. This allows the hair and mucous to trap any fine dust particles and microbes that may be present in the air to be filtered before the air reaches the lungs. Also, breathing in through the nostrils allows the balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide to be maintained in the blood. When breathing is carried out by mouth a larger amount volume of air is inhaled which does not allow this balance to be maintained.
