Question

Why should we call a wooden table a solid ?

Open in App
Solution

Solids:

  • Solid is one of the states of matter. The particles are perfect and tightly packed.
  • It features closely packed atoms whose kinetic energies are much lower than those of liquids and gases.
  • All solids have rigid structures that tend to resist any external forces applied to them.
  • Solids also are known to have a fixed, definite shape (unlike liquids and gases, which assume the shape of the container they are placed in).
  • Furthermore, solids are also known to have a fixed, definite volume (unlike gaseous substances which expand to occupy the entire volume of the container they are placed in).

A wooden table should be called a solid because it matches the characteristics of the solid state.

  • Reasons:
  • It is very hard and rigid.
  • Its shape cannot be changed by altering temperature or pressure.
  • Because the particles in the wooden table are perfect and tightly packed. There is no movement of the constituent particles present.
  • It is quite heavy which means high density.

Hence, the wooden table is considered in a solid state.
