It is a large tract of land covered with thick growth of trees and plants.

Step 2: Importance of forests

1. It is a home for nearly 80% biodiversity on land.
2. They maintain the temperature of earth.
3. Forests help to bring rain.
4. They prevent floods as they soak up runoff; protecting other ecosystems.
5. Forests prevent soil erosion.

Step 3: Reasons for concern for forests

If area covered by forests in a country is less than 33% they should adopt afforestation. If forest cover is very less, it can lead to following issues:

1. Climate Imbalance and change in wind pattern.
2. Increase in Global warming. Trees utilize greenhouse gases. But with deforestation amount of green house gases increase with raises the temperature.
3. Soil erosion, roots of trees bind the soil but cutting trees loosens the soil which erodes with wind and water.
4. Wildlife extinction and habitat loss.
5. It will effect the economy of country as it is a store house of resources.
