Why single bond carbon compound called saturated carbon compound
In case of organic chemistry, the term ‘saturated’ means that a Carbon is holding a maximum number of Hydrogen atoms in single bonds without having any Carbon-Carbon double or triple bond.
The hydrocarbons containing only single bonds are called saturated hydrocarbons because each of the carbon atom is bonded to maximum number of atoms possible, i.e. you cannot add any other atom to it without replacing the existing one. Therefore, it is said to be saturated ( with hydrogen ) usually. Hydrocarbons containing double and triple bonds on other hand, have the ability to still accept additional hydrogen / other atoms without replacing any of the existing atoms. The double/ triple bond can be cleaved and hydrogen/ other atom can be added in its place without replacing the existing one. Hence, it's termed as ' unsaturated
