Question

Why smooth endoplasmic reticulum is considered to be super important?

Open in App
Solution

The smooth endoplasmic reticulum (smooth ER) has many anabolic functions (synthesizing lipids, phospholipids, steroids). For these reasons, it is abundant in the reproductive organs and sebaceous glands beneath the epidermis.

It has metabolic functions (breakdown of carbohydrates and steroids; detox of natural by-products, alcohol, and drugs), which make it abundant in the liver, which breaks down toxins and glycogen.

A modified version of the smooth ER called the sarcoplasmic reticulum is found in muscle cells and stores calcium ions, which it then pumps out into the cytoplasm when an action potential reaches the cell.

Functions of Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum differs in different types of cells.

  • It synthesize lipids and also involved in metabolism of them.
  • It detoxifies toxic chemicals and drugs converting them into safer products, takes place in liver.
  • Sarcoplasmic Reticulum is a special type of Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum responsible for storage of calcium ions. It releases calcium ions into cytoplasm of cell to trigger the contraction of striated muscle cells.

it produces hormones. Smooth ER produces steroid hormones in the adrenal cortex and endocrine glands.
