Question

Why speed of sound does not depend on pressure?

Open in App
Solution

Speed of sound: Speed of sound in a gaseous medium is given by v=γRTμ

Where v is the velocity of the sound

γ is the adiabatic index of the medium the wave traveling in

R is the universal gas constant

T is the temperature of the medium

μ is the molar mass of the medium

1. The speed of sound depends on the temperature of the medium and density of the medium which decides the molar mass of the medium.

2. Clearly speed of sound doesn't depend on the pressure of the medium.

3. One can misunderstand the equation by replacing RT with PV and assuming that the speed of sound depends on pressure, But pressure itself depends on temperature. So, the speed of sound doesn't depend on pressure.
