Why sulphur dioxide is used for preservative gas?

Sulphur Dioxide is widely used as a food preservative because of the following reasons :
It acts as an antioxidant. Because of this , it maintains the appearance of fruits and prevents rotting.
It is used in soft drinks to preserve its colour. For example , it is used in carbonated lemon juice from turning brown .
It is used for dried fruits owing to its antimicrobial properties .Because of this, it is used in various food products. Sulphur Dioxide is sometimes referred to as E220 when used for this purpose.
Sulphur Dioxide is produced naturally when wine or beer is made and it is often added to wine to prevent it from further fermentation inside the bottle.
