Question

Why the cell membrane is the most important organelle?

Open in App
Solution

Cell membrane:

  1. It is the outermost layer in animal cells and is present in plant cells inside the cell wall.
  2. It is semi-permeable in nature allowing entry of only a few substances in and out of the cell.
  3. It provides shape to the cell and also protects it from the external environment.
  4. It is composed of proteins and lipids.

Cell membrane is the most important organelle as:

  1. It encloses the living cells.
  2. It functions as a barrier that protects the cell from toxic substances.
  3. It allows the entry of essential nutrients and chemicals necessary for biosynthetic processes.
  4. It helps in the maintenance of a correct ionic balance on both inside and outside the cell.
  5. It allows the outward movement of molecules synthesized inside the cell.
