Why the chromosome numbee is reduced to half in meiosis as compared to mitosis?

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student ,

Meiosis is also known as reductional division as in this division the chromosome number gets reduced to half.
This is a very crucial step which produced Haploid gametes (Eggs and Sperms).
The haploid gametes can thus fuse to form a Diploid Zygote which is necessary for reproduction.

This is done to maintain the species number of chromosome.
