Question

Why the chromosomes number has reduced into half in daughter cells during meiosis division?

Open in App
Solution

Meiosis:

  1. Meiosis is a type of cell division that is also called as reduction cell division.
  2. The process results in four daughter cells that are haploid, which means they contain half the number of chromosomes of the diploid parent cell.
  3. The number of chromosomes in human cells are 46. i.e, these are present in pairs of 23.
  4. These pairs break apart and get separated in meiosis I.
  5. Thus, each of the two daughter cells formed after first meiotic division have half the number of chromosomes, i.e., 23.
  6. Now each of the 23 chromosomes have two identical chromatids.
  7. So, in meiosis II, these chromatids get separate and in total 4 cells result.
  8. These four cells are haploid and are known as gametes, i.e., sperm or ovum.
