Question

Why the cord of an electric kettle does not glow while the heating element does?

Open in App
Solution

The cord of an electric kettle does not glow while the heating element does because the heater is a resistor and the cord is a conductor. The resistor slows down the current and this causes friction which heats up the case of the resistor. This is what the element is. The cord wires are made of Copper and this is good conductor that has very low resistance so it doesn't get warm. The insulation around the copper wires also block any heat from coming through.
