Question

Why the entire process of decomposition in biogas formation is performed in the absence of oxygen?

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student,

The entire process of decomposition in biogas formation is done in anaerobic condition; i.e., in the absence of oxygen gas. In biogas plant, the cow dung and other wastes are mixed with water to form slurry. The mixture is introduced into a sealed anaerobic chamber. In the chamber, anaerobic microorganisms decompose the slurry to form certain gases such as methane, hydrogen sulphide etc. Anaerobic microorganisms do not require oxygen for the decomposition of cow dung slurry.
