Question

Why the eyes of potato tuber are called axillary buds ?

Open in App
Solution

The potato tuber has so many depressions on the surface of the tubers. Each of these depressions have small buds developed in the axils of the scale leaves. The bud in the depression and the scars of the scale leaf together forms the eye of the Potato. Since the bud develops in the axil of the scale leaf, it is known as the axillary buds.
