Question

Why the heating elements of electrical heating appliances such as electric iron and toaster, etc.,are made up of an alloy rather than a pure metal

Open in App
Solution

Dear student
Conductors of electric heating devices are made of an alloy rather than a pure metal due to the following reasons :

(1) Resistivity of an alloy is generally higher than that of pure metals, .when the current is passed through an element made of alloy, a large amount of heat is produced.

(2) At high temperatures an alloy does not oxidise (burn) readily. Hence, heating element prepared from an alloy has longer life.
