Question

Why The Hot Primitive Sea Rich In Chemicals Was Called Primitive Soup?

Open in App
Solution

The hot primitive sea rich in chemicals was called primitive soup because:

  1. In the environmental conditions before life existed, atoms of inorganic gases continuously broke down and recombined to form new substances.
  2. According to Oparin, one of the first steps in the origin of life was the change of atmospheric gases into simple organic molecules.
  3. During this time, methane was believed to be highly reactive.
  4. The four of its hydrogen atoms could be easily replaced by other atoms.
  5. Therefore, carbon-containing molecules like amino acids, monosaccharides, purines, pyrimidines, formaldehyde, etc were formed.
  6. Such compounds that had carbon atoms linked to each other are known to be found only in living organisms.
  7. These micro molecules thus formed were in the form of colloidal droplets which did not get mixed with the surrounding water.
  8. Thus, the hot primitive sea rich in chemicals was called primitive soup.
