Question

Why the rate of SN2 reaction decreases in a protic solvent?

Open in App
Solution

Dear student,

In Sn2 reactions, the nucleophile is needed to react with the starting substance. This will be the rate-determining step. If the solvent is protic then it will stabilize the nucleophile so much that it basically won’t attack so, the rate of SN2 reaction decreases in an aprotic solvent.
