Question

Why the reaction of Iron oxide with Aluminum is used to join cracked Iron parts of machines?

Open in App
Solution

  • The reactivity of Aluminum is higher than that of Iron so, Iron can easily be displaced by the metal Aluminum.
  • When Iron oxide reacts with aluminum, Aluminium oxide and iron are formed. This reaction is highly exothermic.
  • The reaction involved is: Fe2O3(s)IronOxide+2Al(s)AluminumAl2O3(s)AluminumOxide+2Fe(l)Iron+Heat
  • The above reaction is known as a thermite reaction.
  • The iron obtained in this reaction is in the molten state and so it can be used to fix cracks present in Iron machines.

Hence, the reaction of Iron oxide with aluminum is used to join cracked iron parts of machines because this reaction involves the formation of iron in the molten state. It can then be easily used to fix cracks present in Iron machinery.
