Question

Why the size of weather balloons increases as it ascends to higher altitudes?

Open in App
Solution

The weather balloons rising higher in the air increase in size to balance the pressure.

As we go higher from the ground the pressure starts decreasing as the no of gas molecules is very low in the upper environment(Low density of gases) and that is the reason the pressure outside the balloon is lower in comparison to the pressure inside the balloon.

So, to be in equilibrium balloon increases in size so that area can increase, and hence the pressure decreases and becomes equal to the pressure of the environment.
