Question

Why the solubility of alkyl / aryl group decreases with increase in size?

Open in App
Solution

Solubility of alkyl / aryl group in water depends upon the following the factors Hydrogen bonding.

Greater the extent of H-bonding, higher is the solubility.

Size of the alkyl/aryl group. Higher the hydrocarbon part, lower is the extent of H-bonding and hence lower is the solubility.

Hence, the solubility of alkyl / aryl group decreases with increase in size.
