Why the sun appears to be red in colour during sunset and sunrise?

  1. During sunrise and sunset, the rays have to travel a larger part of the atmosphere because they are very close to the horizon.
  2. Since, red has the larger wavelength, it is least scattered.
  3. Therefore, light apart red colour is mostly scattered away.
  4. Most of the red light, which is the least scattered, enters our eyes.
  5. Thus, the red colour is able to reach our eyes after the atmospheric scattering of light.
