Question

Why there are no SI base units for area and volume?

Open in App
Solution

SI Units:

  1. International system of units (or SI unit system) is the standard system of units accepted worldwide.
  2. All the seven fundamental quantities are assigned a base unit in this system.
  3. For example, length has a unit meter (m) and mass has a unit kilogram (kg).

Reason for no SI base units for area and volume:

  1. In the S.I system, a base unit is assigned to all the fundamental units.
  2. The derived quantities are expressed in terms of these fundamental units.
  3. Area and volume are not fundamental quantities.
  4. Area can be expressed in terms of square meters and volume can be expressed in terms of cubic meters.
  5. Thus, no SI base unit is assigned for area and volume.
