Question

Why there is a need of respiratory pigment in multicellular organisms?

Open in App
Solution

Respiratory pigments are those which have the capability to bind with oxygen. In multicellular organisms, hemoglobin is the main respiratory pigment present in the red blood cells of the blood and it imparts a red color to the blood. It has a higher affinity for oxygen and increases the oxygen carrying capacity of the blood. The respiratory pigments are required because they carry oxygen to the blood and then circulate to the different parts of the body and converts the deoxygenated blood into the oxygenated blood, it releases carbon dioxide back to the environment. This is called the process of the circulation of blood in the heart and body.
