Question

Why there is an increase in mass when a substance is oxidized?

Open in App
Solution

Elements, including metals, on oxidation combine with the oxygen present in air, in fixed ratios by mass, to form compounds called oxides. Since a metal always combines with the oxygen taken from air to form the oxide, it experiences an addition of oxygen with definite increase in mass.
