Elements, including metals, on oxidation combine with the oxygen present in air, in ﬁxed ratios by mass, to form compounds called oxides. Since a metal always combines with the oxygen taken from air to form the oxide, it experiences an addition of oxygen with deﬁnite increase in mass.
