Question

Why Transformer Rating is in kVA not in kW?

Open in App
Solution

Transformer:

  1. It transfers electric power from one circuit to the other.
  2. It doesn't change power value or frequency.

Losses in transformer:

  1. There are two types of losses in transformers: Copper losses and Iron losses
  2. Copper losses are due to transformer windings and depend on the flow of current (ampere A) through it.
  3. Iron losses depend on the voltage(Volt V).
  4. Therefore total losses are due to voltage (V) and current (A) and not to power factor.

Thus Transformer ratings are expressed in kVA and not in kW.
