Question

Why urbanisation is not eco-friendly?

Open in App
Solution

Urbanisation is a recent phenomenon. It is the movement of rural people from rural areas to urban areas. This phenomenon is often termed urban drift.

Urbanisation is not eco-friendly because of following reasons:

  1. The concentration of population has been maximum in big cities and towns due to urbanisation. More population results in more pollution.
  2. Industries, coal power plants, etc. are major causes of air pollution.
  3. In cities, more vehicles, and factories are present resulting in more emissions of pollutant gases.
  4. Industrial waste mixes in the water causing water pollution.
  5. Due to more urbanization, cities show fewer plantations. We know, plants help to prevent pollution. So, less plantation results in increased pollution in cities.
  6. The main sources of radiation are the nuclear wastes from the nuclear plants engaged in the production of electricity and other installations, like nuclear reactors or from plants, instruments used in laboratories hospitals, and research labs, which are mostly situated in the cities causing more radiation pollution.
  7. Urbanization results in the waste generated from houses, offices, establishments, hotels, shops, schools, etc., and is another source of land pollution if not treated properly.
  8. The street traffic sounds, construction sounds in factories like drilling, sounds from flights in airports, and sounds from heavy machinery in industries create more noise pollution in cities.

So, in every aspect, we can say urbanisation is not eco-friendly.
