Solution

Dear Student

During World War I Turkey was defeated and Britain won the war or was on the side of the winning party . So the British humiliated and insulted the Caliph in Turkey who was considered to be the religious head of all Muslims in the world . This hurt the sentiments of Muslims and so the Khilafat movement was started by the Ali brothers . The objective of the movement was to bring back the respect of the Caliph . Mahatma Gandhi saw this as an opportunity to overthrow the British . He joined the movement and started the non-cooperation movement to bring about Hindu- Muslim unity and to attack the British with double impact .
