By the end of the novel, Silas Marner came to be regarded as an exceptional person. This was mainly because even after having lost all his money without being at fault, he had worked tirelessly at his loom and raised an orphan child, Eppie, the illegitimate daughter of Geoffrey Cass. Nobody was jealous of him because his good fortune was well deserved. According to old Macey, what Marner did for Eppie would have made sure that he got back his money somehow or at least it would have made sure that the thief was somehow brought to justice.
