The idea of equality before law is fairly new in India because Indian society has traditionally been organized according to caste. The concept of caste is against the idea of equality before law. In the caste system, the social position of a person depends upon the caste to which he or she belongs. Hence, Brahmans were regarded as superior to Shudras. Such ideas are of course no longer acceptable in present day India where everybody is regarded as equal before the law.
