Jawahar Rozgar Yojana was launched as a Centrally Sponsored Scheme on 1st April 1989 by merging National Rural Employment Programme NREP and Rural Landless Employment Guarantee Programme RLEGP. Its main objective was the generation of additional gainful employment the unemployed and underemployed people in rural areas through the creation of rural economic infrastructure, community, and social assets with the aim of improving the quality of life of the rural poor. The Jawahar Rozgar Yojana JRY has been recast as the Jawahar Gram Samridhi Yojana (JGSY) with effect from 1.4.1999 to impart a thrust to the creation of rural infrastructure.
