Solution

Instructions: The answer to this question should introduce Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji and discuss the reason why he formed the Khalsa Panth. This should be followed by explaining the tenets of the Panth.

Solution: Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the son of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, was born on 22nd December, 1666 A.D., at Patna. He was merely nine years old when he assumed Guruship. To put an end to the religious cruelties of the Mughals, he created the Khalsa Panth.

Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji organised a congregation at Anandpur Sahib on the day of Baisakhi in 1699 A.D. He selected the five beloved ones or the ‘Panj Payaras’ and gave them the Nectar of Immortality. He then requested to be baptised by them. This is how he laid the foundation of the Khalsa Panth.

Every Khalsa was supposed:
  • To have Amrit to enter the Khalsa Panth.
  • To keep a high moral character.
  • To use ‘Singh’/’Kaur’ with his/her name.
  • To believe in one God and condemn caste discrimination.
  • To wear the five Sikh emblems.
  • To wear weapons and be ready to wage a religious war.
  • To recite the Gurbani.
  • To donate 1/10th of his earnings to religious purposes.
  • To avoid consuming tobbaco or other intoxicants.
  • To wish ‘Waheguru Ji ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji ki Fateh’ while meeting others.
