Why was the population growth rate not high before 1921?

India was in the first stage of demographic transition till 1921. In this stage both birth rate and death rate were high leading to a slow growth of population. This period is also known as a period of stagnant population. The main reasons for this scenario were:

i. Poverty

ii. Malnutrition

iii. Famines

iv. Epidemics

v. Poor health facilities.
