Why we use petrol or diesel in vehicles instead of using coal or any other fuel?

Petrol and diesel are more efficient than coal.Also they cause very less pollution than coal.Petrol or diesel can produce large amount of energy from small quantity where as coal can produce only less.So by considering all these coal is not used in vehicles.
