In the 16th century Enclosures promoted sheep farming and in the 18th century for grain cultivation

In the 16th century

1. Price of wool went up, and rich farmers wanted to expand their production to earn profit.

2. So they began dividing, enclosured lands and built hedges and expanded the area under cultivation for profit.

In 18th century

1. English population expanded rapidly

2. There was increase in demand for food in market

3. Britain at this time was in industrialisation stage and France was at war with England

4. This disturbed the import of food from Europe

5. Then landowners pressurized the Parliament to pass the Enclosure act
