Question

Why when lumps of calcium carbonate are added to dilute sulphuric acid, only a few bubbles of gas are seen?

Solution

When a lump of calcium carbonate is added to dilute sulphuric acid only a few bubbles are seen because when calcium carbonate reacts with sulphuric acid calcium sulphate will form which will be again an insoluble substance and hence the production of carbon dioxide will also be affected and it will be less.

The chemical reaction is as follows-

CaCO3+H2SO4ā†’CaSO4+H2O+CO2

This carbon dioxide will be produced in the form of bubbles.
