Question

Why would the sky have looked dark if the Earth had no atmosphere?

Open in App
Solution

Step 1: Scattering of light

  1. When a beam of light strikes particles such as dust, water droplet, etc present in the atmosphere, the beam of light is scattered.
  2. The intensity of the scattered light is inversely proportional to the wavelength of the incident light.
  3. Because of this phenomenon, we see different colors of the sky at different phases during the day.

Step 2: Explanation

  1. There would have been no particles if the Earth had no atmosphere.
  2. As a result, there would have been no light scattering. The sky would have seemed dark in such a case.
