Question

Why is Zener diode heavily doped?

Open in App
Solution

Step 1: Zener Diode

A Zener diode is a semiconductor device that allows current to flow in either direction. The diode is made up of a unique, strongly doped p-n junction that is designed to conduct in the opposite direction when a certain voltage is reached.

Step 2: Explanation

  1. A Zener diode is always strongly/heavily doped so as to minimize the breakdown voltage.
  2. This results in a very thin depletion region as well.
  3. This is also done to operate the diode in both directions.
