Question

Will an increase or decrease in pressure help to liquefy a gas?

Open in App
Solution

  1. The process of converting a matter from its gaseous state to liquid state is known as liquefaction of gases.
  2. An increase in pressure at a lower temperature helps to liquefy a gas.
  3. This happens because gases have large intermolecular space which allows them to be compressed upon applying pressure.
  4. Once compressed, the intermolecular space decreases. As a result intermolecular force among particles increases and the gas changes to liquid.
