Question

Will the elevation in boiling points be same if 0.1 mol of NaCl or 0.1 mol of sugar is dissolved in 1L of water? Explain.

Open in App
Solution

The elevation in boiling point is calculated as
Tb=i×Kb×m
Here,
i is the Vant Hoff Factor.
Kb is the molal elevation constant
m is molality

For NaCl, the Vant Hoff factor comes out to be two as it is an ionic compound while for glucose the Vant Hoff factor is 1 as it cannot dissociate in the solution. Therefore, elevation in boiling point would not be the same.
