With a birth name of Tenzin Gyatso, I was born on 6 July 1935, to a farming family, in a small hamlet located in Taktser, Amdo, northeastern Tibet. At the age of two, then named Lhamo Dhondup, I was recognised as the reincarnation of the previous Dalai Lama.
When China invaded Tibet in 1950, even as a teenager, I had to take up a political role for my people. After a failed Tibetan uprising against Chinese rule, I fled to India in early 1959. I went into exile in the northern hill town of Dharamshala, where I still live. Who am I?
