  • The name of Delhi Sultanate comes from the rulers of this empire, who called themselves ‘Sultans’. This empire was established with Delhi as its base.
  • The first rulers of the Delhi Sultanate were the Mamluk dynasty, also known as the Slave dynasty. It was called the slave dynasty because the first ruler of the Sultanate, Qutub-ud-din Aibak was a slave of Muhammed Ghori.
  • The names of three great kings of the Slave dynasty are as follows-
    • Qutub-ud-din Aibak (1206– 1210).
    • Iltutmish (1211– 1236).
    • Balban (1266– 1286).
