With reference to the Union Parliament, answer the following question:
How many members may be nominated to the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha? Give one reason as to why they may be nominated to the Lok Sabha.

• The Lok Sabha is the house of the people and consists of a total of 545 members of parliament which includes 2 members nominated by the President. The other 543 members of parliament are elected during the Lok Sabha elections and represent the 543 electoral constituencies of India. Thus, there is one local MP from each constituency who acts as a representative in the Lok Sabha of the parliament.
  
• 2 members were nominated from the Anglo Indian community up till 2019. This provision was discontinued.
• The Rajya Sabha or the council of states gives proportional representation of each Indian state in the parliament. Rajya Sabha members in parliament cannot exceed 250 with 12 members nominated by the President for their expertise in respective fields. The majority of the members of the Rajya Sabha (238) are elected by the legislative state assembly members to represent the parliament at the center.
