India has worked with UNESCO several times as a developing nation. We’ve been a member since its beginning in 1946. The then Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru, had proclaimed it to be “the conscience of mankind”. In 1949, a National Commission for Cooperation with UNESCO was established by the Government of India. It comprises of five sub-commissions. These sub-commissions promote UNESCO programmes and send members to participate in UNESCO’s programmes and conferences. In order to preserve Taj Mahal's beauty, UNESCO aids in funding its conservation.
