Diaphragm contracts (tightens) and moves downward when we breathe in or inhale. This improves our chest cavity's room into which our lungs expand. Also, the intercostal muscles between our ribs assistance to increase chest cavity. When we inhale, they contract to pull our rib cage up and out. The muscles that assist inspire air are diaphragm and intercostal muscles. The diaphragm contracts pulling the thoracic cavity floor inferior during inspiration. This generates a vacuum that can be used to fill the air inhaled. During inspiration, the intercostal muscles elevate the lungs, thus helping the inhaled air get into the lungs.
