  • The reduction of oxide to metal is carried out in the presence of carbon in a blast furnace by the process called smelting.
  • In the blast furnace, the iron ore i.e. Haematite (Fe2O3) is mixed with coke(C) and limestone or Calcium carbonate(CaCO3) approximately in the ratio 8:4:1.

Hence, iron ore, coke, and limestone are the raw materials placed in the blast furnace.
