This difference between the Catholics and the Protestants killed over 3,600, and more than 30,000 were injured. Finally, in 1998, the two groups decided to come to a peace agreement. It was agreed that there would now be a Northern Ireland Assembly that would make decisions on its own. The protestants did not want to become a part of the Republic of Ireland. They feared that their community would become a minority and hence their culture would not be well represented.
