With the help of a chemical equation explain the addition of hydrogen to unsaturated hydrocarbon? Also state essential conditions required for the reaction to occur.

Alkenes does not react with hydrogen as such but in the presence of a metal catalyst, addition of hydrogen occurs to form alkane.
Different conditions are required depending upon the metal catalyst. For eg. Nickel is used at higher temperature, Platinum or Palladium are used in finely divided state adsorbed over charcoal or Platinum is used in the form of oxide PtO2.
CH3CH=CH2 + H2 Pd/C or Pt/C or Ni/ CH3CH2CH3
