With the help of a labeled diagram, explain the distribution of magnetic field due to current through a circular coil.

  1. When a current is passed through a circular coil, it produces a magnetic field.
  2. The magnetic field lines are shown in the following diagram.

3. From the diagram, it is clear that the magnetic field lines are in the form of concentric circles.

4. The field lines have a greater curvature near the wire and are almost straight near the centre of the coil.

5. It indicates that the magnetic field is uniform at the centre of the coil.

6. The direction of the magnetic field produced by a circular coil is given by the right-hand thumb rule.

7. The end of the coil looking at which the current flow is anti-clockwise acts as a north pole and the end at which the current flow is clockwise acts as a south pole.

8. The magnetic field due to all the turns has the same direction, hence larger the number of turns in the coil, the stronger the magnetic field produced.
