Question

With the help of a neat diagram arrive at an expression for finding the refractive index of a prism.

Solution

We know the relation between angle of deviation δ, Angle of incidence i, angle of emergence i and prism angle A to be
δ = i +i -A
Also for minimum deviation δm, i = i and r = r
Hence δm = i+i -A = 2i- A
or, i=A+δm2.....................(i)
Also, since r+r' =A
or, r = A/2.................................(ii)
The refractive index is
μ=sinisinr
Using (i) and (ii)
μ=sinA+δm2sinA2
Also if the angle of prism A is small, δm is also small.
Hence the above equation then becomes
μ=A+δm2A2
