Chemical change: A change in which one or more new substances are formed is called a chemical change.

  • Chemical changes create a new product.
  • The changes in Chemical change are irreversible and permanent.
  • Examples are burning of any substance, and rusting of iron.

Activity: Burning a piece of paper

  • Take a piece of waste paper and a candle light.
  • Burn the paper.
  • It converts to ash.

The burning of paper is a chemical change. Ash is formed as a result of the burning of paper which is a new product.

When we burn the paper, It is changing chemically into completely different molecules.

The air combines with the carbon and hydrogen in the paper (as paper is an organic material, obtained from woods), turning some of it into carbon dioxide and water. And energy is released into the surroundings as heat.
